The PEACE Campaign (Preventing Elder Abuse and Changing Experiences) was launched last June to mark the third annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). 12,000 Purple campaign ribbons were distributed throughout the Borough, bearing the campaign strap line “Elder Abuse Is No Laughing Matter. This slogan directly linked the campaign with its sponsor Comic Relief. Age Concern Wirral delivers the campaign, which is an awareness raising project, aimed directly at older people and deals with the issues surrounding Elder Abuse.
The initial concept was to raise awareness of the five main types of Elder Abuse. This was achieved by developing a series of hard hitting posters which related five ‘characters’ real life experiences using a storyboard format. The posters along with their six foot pop up equivalents were released over a 10 month period and were displayed in strategic locations such as hospitals, One Stop shops and Doctors surgeries throughout Wirral. The posters were supported by the systematic distribution of 12,000 leaflets.
The campaign manager Shirley Tyler has spent the last 14 months visiting groups of older people such as those in sheltered accommodation, lunch clubs and church groups, delivering a series of short talks about Elder Abuse. This will continue throughout the duration of the campaign.
During the Flu Vaccine drive a custom made advert was shown in Doctors and Dentists surgeries. This can be viewed via the Age Concern Wirral website by following the links.
Following the success of the poster campaign, Age Concern Wirral was keen to maintain the campaign’s momentum and commissioned a full size Superlambanana which bears the campaign slogan. The aim was to use an iconic figure, such as the Superlambanana, to capture the public’s attention and spread the campaign message even further. This was ‘revealed’ to the public at a launch event in Sainsbury’s Upton to coincide with Comic Reliefs release of the 2009 ‘Red Noses’ in January. The Superlambanana was christened ‘SuperGranBanana’ after a naming competition ran in the local press.
Since then the campaign has continued to move forward and recent statistics show that there has been a rise in the reporting of incidences of Elder Abuse to the Adult Protection Unit in Wirral Department of Adult Social Services.
The fourth annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was marked this June when Age Concern Wirral held a ‘Pledge Event’, where 60 Senior Professionals from the local Hospitals, Emergency Services, Wirral Council and PCT to name but a few, pledged their support to the campaign and the message it continues to deliver.
